The John Muir Trail

Here are some photos from our thru-hike on the John Muir Trail this past summer of 2024. One day I’d like to add embedded maps and links, but for now, just photos.

We began this hike in mid-June of 2024 and finished at Whitney Portal a few days after July 4th. This is slightly earlier than a typical JMT hike. The ice and snow on the passes was not bad; 2024 had been a dead average year for precipitation in the Sierra Nevada. Silver lining: very few bugs in the early season and we finished just as the summer monsoon began. Talk about threading a needle!

The trailhead was Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley. From there we began the JMT southbound despite heading in a northeasterly direction for the first two days. After passing through Tuolumne Meadows and finally making that south turn towards Lyell Canyon, we began the slow ascent to Donahue Pass.

All smiles before the first big pass of the hike! Not sure what to expect.

What's the rush! Chill!

The South Fork San Joaquin bridge was still impassable during our hike. We detoured up and over Piute Pass to Bishop Pass and Dusy Basin. Highly recommend as its own hike!

Gotta keep a clean site! No shoes indoors!

Forester Pass! Almost there! Highest point on the PCT. But the JMT? That's Mt. Whitney...

Proof we made it to the top of Whitney: the Smithsonian shelter. Arrived just in time for sunrise.

There to here in a single day.
